Numerous people in the process of building a new home have told a Cavan councillor that bad weather means they will miss out on a €6,000 development fee waiver. Councillor Shane P O'Reilly told the Wider View programme some people are missing out on a government scheme which waivers development fees on new-builds under certain circumstances.
Couples building their first homes are among the groups missing out on up to €6,0000 as the deadline to file commencement notices to receive the government incentive expires on April 28th. Months of rainfall culminated in the wettest March on record, which, has meant diggers and other construction vehicles can't drive onto building sites to begin work on new house developments.
With starting works delayed, the knock-on effect is felt at every stage of the building process, so homeowners will miss the 28th April deadline set by the Government. Councillor O'Reilly is calling for an extension: "It has led to a major, I suppose, amount of work that people are trying to cram in before April 28th to avail of this," Cllr O'Reilly told Northern Sound, "I have spoken top numerous people who are finding themselves that they 're going to miss out on this and €6000 is €6000 and indeed, in other counties it's a hell of a lot more and the situation is, I believe, that it's time for the Government to extend this to the end of the year."
