Fianna Fáil leader Michéal Martin has called for a special statutory body to be established to tackle crime in the border regions.
It follows the vicious attack on local businessman Kevin Lunney last week.
Speaking to The Joe Finnegan Show, Martin said that a criminal paramilitary legacy has continued post the Good Friday agreement and that these elements need to be stamped out.
He also highlighted the killings of Gardaí Adrian Donohoe and Tony Golden as reasons for calling for the creation of a cross-border agency in the Dáil yesterday.
And while Martin acknowledged the work being put in to apprehend those responsible for the attack on Lunney, he also said that the response would have been more forceful had it occurred on an executive in Dublin.
