Emma Tolan joint captain of Irish U20 team

Cavan Eagles have 2 players invovled with the squad

Virginia's Emma Tolan is set to represent Ireland on the European stage once again as the FIBA U20 Women's EuroBasket Division B Championship gets underway in Samokov, Bulgaria, on July 4. The talented forward heads into the tournament in impressive form following a recent training camp in Bulgaria and Portugal, where Ireland faced strong opposition from Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Czechia and Portugal during the final phase of preparations. Tolan also carries added responsibility in Samokov, holding the distinction of being named joint captain of the Irish team alongside Ava Walsh of Cork side Brunell. Her involvement this summer is all the sweeter given the disappointment of twelve months ago, when a broken thumb sustained in a warm-up game ruled her out just days before last summer's European Championship. Fully recovered, she returns not only restored to the squad but as one of its leaders. Speaking ahead of the tournament, Tolan said the squad was relishing the challenge.

It's always a huge honour to represent Ireland and I'm looking forward to getting out on the court with this group.

Ireland have been drawn as top seeds in Group A alongside Greece, Azerbaijan and Albania and will be aiming to secure a place in the knockout stages. The championship takes place in Samokov, situated almost 1,000 metres above sea level in the Rila mountain region of Bulgaria. Ireland's recent training camp in the area should prove beneficial, having already allowed the squad to acclimatise to the altitude and playing conditions they will encounter during the tournament. For Tolan, the event represents another significant milestone in what has been a remarkable sporting journey. A product of Cavan Eagles Basketball Club and Virginia College, she established herself as one of the country's brightest young talents before making history last year when she became the first Irish player recruited to the women's basketball programme at the University of Oklahoma. Competing in the highly competitive Southeastern Conference (SEC), Tolan spent her freshman season with an Oklahoma side that reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament and finished the campaign with a 26–7 record.

There is further Cavan Eagles interest in the Irish squad through Sophie Staunton. Although originally from Santry, Staunton played a key role for the Eagles during the 2025/26 season and has also earned selection for the national side. Like Tolan, she is preparing for the next chapter of her basketball career in the United States, having committed to NCAA Division I programme Saint Peter's University in New Jersey. Cavan Eagles Head Coach John Stephens said the club was immensely proud to see both players representing Ireland at such an important championship.

To have two players with such strong links to Cavan Eagles representing Ireland at a European Championship is a fantastic achievement for both of them and for the club.
