The death has occurred of the former GAA president and Monaghan ulster winning manager Seán McCague.
McCague led Monaghan to the Ulster championship in 1979. The first time the county had won the provincial title in 41-years.
Six years later McCague led Monaghan to their first and so far only national league title. Monaghan also won the ulster title that year.
As an administrator, McCague served as Monaghan county secretary, Ulster Council delegate and also delegate to the GAA’s Central Council. McCague was elected president at the annual congress of 1999.
The Scotstown man was one of the most influnential GAA presidents while in office from 2000-2003.
As president McCague over saw the deletion of Rule 21. The controversial ban on members of the British and Northern Ireland security from joining the GAA.
McCague was heavily involved at the GAA at all levels ahead of the historic vote.
Born in 1945, the Monaghan teacher from Scotstown was one of the few presidents to have had top-class experience of managing teams and being an administrator.
McCague is survived by his wife Bernie and daughters, Paula, Nuala, Martha, Freda and Emma.
