21 assaults on Gardai in local division last year

Figures also indicate an increase in absence related to Injury on Duty.

21 assaults on members of An Garda Síochána were recorded in the Louth Cavan Monaghan Division during 2025.

Figures released to Northern Sound also showed that nationally there was 344 assaults of Garda members over the past 12 months.

The figures for the local Garda division also revealed that one member was injured by an animal, 2 were injured in a road collision and 7 members of the force were hurt during a trip or fall while on duty during 2025.

In 2024, 21 assaults were perpetrated on members of An Garda Síochána during 2024 in the Louth Cavan Monaghan Division, while 309 were attacked across the country.

In that year locally, 1 member of the force were injured by animal, 9 were injured in a road collision and 4 were hurt during a trip or fall.

This data refers to assaults on members of An Garda Síochána which resulted in a formal occupational injury report by An Garda Síochána, and does not include the multiple other minor assaults on duty, which did not result in the members reporting an occupational injury.

The Garda Commissioner is on record as highlighting the physical danger and associated risks to health that comes as part of being a member of An Garda Síochána and working to keep people and communities safe.

Figures also indicate an increase in absence related to Injury on Duty. This is a reflection of the unpredictable and dangerous nature of frontline duties undertaken by Gardaí nationwide.

At the launch of a Taser Pilot for frontline uniform Gardaí last month, the Garda Commissioner said: “One of my key roles as Commissioner is that I have a duty of care to every person that works for me. Unfortunately, we have about 300 members of An Garda Síochána who are injured every year and we have seen some extremely concerning incidents where some of our members have been injured.

“It’s not just about keeping members of An Garda Síochána safe, it’s obviously members of the public as well. Some of these really concerning dynamic incidents, particularly in our urban areas where violence is being used, we’ve seen knives, swords, axes being used. So it’s really important that we have everything that we need to keep the public safe.”
