The free HRT scheme is up and running - despite the full details having not yet been finalised.
While details are yet to be finalised, Fine Gael's Pauric Clerkin said he was "grateful" Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill for engaging with all stakeholders so successfully to deliver this medication free of charge for the many women around the country who need it.
Cllr Clerkin confirmed that a total of 24 pharmacies will offer the free medication to women in Co Monaghan, which he says is "extremely positive."
Cllr Clerkin said it's important to note that the new arrangement includes a pharmacy dispensing fee, so medication will be completely free.
He said this scheme is "transformational for women" and he commends the pharmacies in Co Monaghan who have joined the scheme to continue to provide vital healthcare for their communities.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Clerkin said; "It’s important to note that the new arrangement includes a pharmacy dispensing fee, so medication will be completely free.
"Women who have been private patients and who wish to avail of this will need to possess a Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS) card. Medical card holders can continue to access HRT medication as normal – they do not need a DPS card.
"The symptoms women encounter during perimenopause and menopause are varied and women’s lives can be hugely impacted. HRT is such an important medicinal regime for women and can positively improve their lives and make daily living much easier.
"This scheme is transformational for women. I commend the pharmacies in Co Monaghan who have joined the scheme to continue to provide vital healthcare for their communities."
