Local authorities in the Northern Sound have met just 25% of their targets for own-build social housing accommodation between 2022 and 2024.
It comes as a new league table to track social housing delivery by local councils is set to be introduced. The table shows that many councils are actually achieving their housing targets, but are falling below the mark when it comes to building their own social homes rather than buying turnkey solutions. Between 2022 and 2024, Monaghan County Council built 68 social homes, 29% of their target of 238. While Cavan achieved just 21% of their own target, with 64 homes built from a target of 312. However, when other home delivery methods are included, such as purchasing turnkey homes to use as social housing, Monaghan exceeded their target by 133% Including turnkey methods, Cavan achieved 68% of their target. Housing Minister James Browne says that local authorities need to be building their own social homes to solve the housing crisis
Three local authorities met less than 10 per cent of the target - Cork County, Kildare and Louth.
Just over 5,000 social homes were built nationally between 2022 and 2024, compared to a target of 27,400.
