The number of septic tanks that failed inspections in Cavan and Monaghan have been released. Out of the 44 inspections carried out by the Environment Protection Agency in Monaghan last year, the majority - 27 - failed. The EPA inspected 33 septic tanks at private properties in County Cavan in 2023 where 16 were found to be non-compliant and 17 passed.
The year previous, the EPA failed nine systems in Cavan and 11 in Monaghan. The regional figures were included in nationwide statistics released yesterday.
Nationally, almost half of septic tanks inspected by the EPA last year were found to be faulty. The EPA are asking the public to make sure they maintain their tanks regularly and avail of Government grants if repairs are needed.
