The 83rd anniversary of the Cavan Orphanage fire tragedy is being marked today.
An event yesterday remembered the 35 children and one adult whose lives were claimed by the St Joseph’s Orphanage fire on February 23rd 1943.
Cavan Orphanage Memorial Committee organised a remembrance event at the graveside in Cullies graveyard yesterday afternoon.
Sean Galligan from the committee said that night a fire started but we're not sure exactly what caused it.
He said it probably started in the laundry underneath the floors of the dormitories.
The girls on the lower dormitory were evacuated successfully but unfortunately the ones on the top two dormitories were trapped.
According to Sean, plans for a memorial to remember those who died will be erected in the future and those plans are progressing.
Sean says very quicky the fire took hold of the building.
