9,567 learner drivers on locals roads is a 'crisis'

Mr Hyland warned that the surge in learner drivers on our roads poses a direct threat to Irish road safety.

New figures released from the Irish Road Safety Authority (RSA) reveal that there are 9,567 learner permit holders now on roads across Cavan and Monaghan.

Cavan had 5,799 learner driver permit holders on the roads in September of this year and Monaghan had 3,768.

The number of learner permit holders in Cavan has increased by 208 over the last six months.

Monaghan's figure also increased by 125 over the same period.

Most learner permit holders in Cavan are aged between 17-20 (1,752 drivers) and 30 and 39 (1,135). 4 learner permit holders in Cavan are over the age of 80 while 45 learner permit holders are between 70 and 79 years old in Cavan according to figures provided by the RSA.

Most learner permit holders in Monaghan are aged between 17-20 (1,323 drivers) and 30 and 39 (579). 3 learner permit holders in Monaghan are over the age of 80 while 21 learner permit holders are between 70 and 79 years old in Monaghan according to figures provided by the RSA.

Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) President Ger Hyland says roads have become "dangerous places" for his members.

Speaking to Northern Sound, he accused the RSA of not getting a handle on what is a crisis for Irish road safety:
