A5 to benefit from cross border funding

The A5 is considered one of the most dangerous roads in Ireland.

The Irish Government has announced a series of investments in the North. €600 million will be put towards upgrading the A5, which runs through Derry and Tyrone and connects Donegal to Dublin. There have been many false dawns since the plans to upgrade the A5 were approved by the Stormont Executive 17 years ago. However it’s hoped with the governments new funding commitment that approval for the scheme will be reconfirmed and construction work can finally begin in the near future.

But the issue could once again go to the courts as the opposition group The A5 Alliance, has mounted a number of legal challenges. The A5 is considered one of the most dangerous roads in Ireland - 48 people have been killed in collisions along the 93km stretch since 2006. Meanwhile, 50 million euro is being put towards the redevelopment of Casement Park, which will be one of two stadiums in Ireland used during Euro 2028. There are plans also to have cheaper trains between Dublin and Belfast, which will run every hour.
