Today, the court-appointed Examiner has informed staff that 50 positions will be lost, pending High Court approval.
Minister Niamh Smyth says her immediate thoughts are with the workers and their families in Mullagh and the surrounding communities.
She said this is a worrying and uncertain time for many households, and I want to assure everyone affected that you are not facing it alone.
The local minister says the examinership process is still ongoing and any final decisions rest with the High Court.
“In the meantime, IDA Ireland remains fully engaged with the Examiner, and I have instructed my Department to keep Wellman International at the very top of their agenda.
“Wellman has been at the heart of Mullagh for decades. Generations of families have worked in this company, and their skill, dedication, and loyalty are part of what makes this community so strong. When I met with staff in June, I was struck by their passion, positivity, and commitment to the company’s future. That spirit has not gone unnoticed, and it is something this community can take pride in.”
The local representative said as a local Minister she is ensuring that every corner of her Department is continuously briefed on Wellman International and that all resources are made available from the IDA, Enterprise Ireland and with officials in the Department of Enterprise. Going forward it is crucial that those impacted receive the adequate support to navigate their next steps.
Minister Smyth has confirmed tonight that she has spoken with Minister Dara Calleary and asked that the support of the Department of Social Protection is given to those impacted in every capacity they need.
At national level, she says the Government remains focused on job creation and competitiveness.
“To everyone affected by today’s announcement, please know my constituency office is here for you. We will work with you directly to connect you with the supports you need and to help guide you through this challenging period. I am determined that together we will face this challenge and secure a better future for the families and community around Wellman.”
