Advice on security for local residents ahead of darker evening

He said burglaries traditionally tend to rise at this time of the year.

A local member of An Garda Síochana is encouraging homeowners to protect their homes over the winter months.

As the darker evening approach Sergeant Joe Glackin Crime Prevention Officer for Cavan and Monaghan is highlighting An Garda Síochána's anti-burglary awareness campaign.

He said burglaries traditionally tend to rise at this time of the year. The campaign is part of Operation Thor, a national multi-strand anti-crime initiative which actively targets organised crime gangs and repeat offenders. It involves a wide-range of enforcement, crime prevention and public awareness measures.

Sergeant Glackin said local homeowners should endeavour to make sure their home looks occupied - to Lock Up and Light Up. Use timer switches to turn on lights, lock all doors and windows, store keys away from windows and letterboxes, and use your alarm. He said taking these simple steps will lessen a home’s vulnerability, deter burglars and protect homes.
