All tenancies across Cavan and Monaghan will now benefit from rent controls as Rent Pressure Zones are expanded countywide.
Previously, none of Monaghan's three local electoral areas were located within a Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ).
However, with the enactment of new legislation renters in Monaghan's three electoral areas of Ballybay-Clones, Monaghan and Carrickmacross-Castleblaney are now covered by RPZs.
As well as this, renters in Cavan's three electoral areas of Cavan-Belturbet, Ballyjamesduff and Bailieborough-Cootehill are also now covered.
In RPZs, rent increases are capped at the level of inflation to a maximum of 2% for existing tenancies.
Marking the significant passing of legislation, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne said protecting renters is essential in the moves made towards increased supply of housing.
He highlighted the importance of striking a balance between landlords, renters, and the urgent need to invigorate more supply of homes, including places to rent as well as places to buy.
