The average annual earnings for people living in Monaghan last year is one of the lowest in the country.
The median annual earnings for Monaghan for 2023 stood at €35,894. The annual earnings in Cavan were €43,221 in 2023, up 3.3% on 2022.
The Central Statistics Office provided a breakdown of last year's incomes per county.

Nationally, the highest earners are living in Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow. Statisticians found Dublin had the highest median annual earnings last year, at just over 47,800 euro.
The lowest incomes were recorded in Donegal, Monaghan and Kerry. Dr Eimear Heffernan from the CSO says the Border and Midlands regions had the lowest proportion of higher earners.
