Annual plan welcomed but concerns about potential development of Lough Muckno and roads funding

PJ O'Hanlon claimed the council is "not even catching our tail" when it comes to roads funding.

Monaghan councillors welcomed the annual service delivery plan at a recent County Council meeting.

However, concern was expressed about the potential development of Lough Muckno and roads funding.

The annual service delivery plan breaks down the county's corporate plan for 2020-2024 into a detailed strategy for the year ahead.

Seamus Coyle said the €74 million allocation for 2022 was a "huge budget that will have a big impact".

PJ O'Hanlon also welcomed the "massive amount of money" and noted that the "council is a big employer".

However, he expressed concern about roads funding, and added that he has been "inundated with called in south Monaghan".

€25 million of the €74 million budget is allocated to road transport and safety.

While Councillor O'Hanlon praised the Council's road team, he claimed the council is "not even catching our tail" when it comes to roads funding.

Elsewhere, Councillor Noel Keelan raised concerns about the potential development of Lough Muckno.

He said he received representations from "Friends of Muckno" expressing concern about the environmental impact the works could have.

Councillor Keelan asked if "strict environmental procedures would be followed".

However, Director of Services Paul Clifford said any works would have to abide by climate change laws.

Meanwhile, PJ O'Hanlon said councillors had already signed off on implementing these strict environmental procedures.

He added that "time should not be wasted talking about things we have already agreed to", and Aoife McCooey told the meeting that she would "never propose something that would affect biodiversity".
