Auto-enrolment pension scheme begins today

After many years of highlighting a pension scheme for all, the auto-enrolment scheme begins today.

Last year the former minister Heather Humphreys signed the commencement notices for the scheme.

From today, the employee, the employer and the state all contribute to auto-enrolment.

Under the system, if you are not paying into a pension scheme, you will be automatically enrolled..

For every €3 put in by an employee, the employer will also contribute €3, and the State will contribute €1.

Anna Smith from Farnham Financial Services based in Cavan says the reason behind the scheme is to ensure everyone has a pension come their retirement.

She says she can see the logic behind it.
