Average speed cameras will help in reducing road collisions and road deaths according to the AA.
The Average Safety Camera systems in place on the N3 in Cavan will go operational on Friday October 25th.
Vehicles detected driving in excess of the 100km/h posted speed limit will be subject to prosecution from 12:00 midday on Friday. The cameras measure a cars speed between two points and calculates the average, with those found to be speeding automatically issued 3 penalty points and a €160 fine. Jennifer Kilduff head of marketing and PR at AA says they are a necessary measure to reduce road deaths.
"The first camera will capture the driver's number plate as they pass by it. The second one at the end of the point in the road will capture the same and the system will then calculate the time it has taken for the motorist to get from point A to point B and calculate the average speed. It's to reduce average speed, reduce road collisions, and ultimately its to reduce road deaths".
