Behind the scenes on Ulster Final Day

"It's really special- the home of Ulster football, it always has been."

The chairperson of Clones G.A.A has been outlining the work that goes on behind the scenes to prepare St. Tiernach's Park for the Ulster Final.

All week, the town has been working hard to make sure that the Fermanagh St. and the surrounding areas are ready to host the thousands of fans that are coming to the town.

With just two days to go until Monaghan take on Armagh, the executive of Clones G.A.A are excited about the event.

The club's chairperson, James Kierans, told Northern Sound that he hasn't been "down the town" on an Ulster Final day in 18 years.

Instead, like so many others, he will be helping out up at the pitch.

Speaking to Northern Sound, James said that Clones is special on Ulster Final Day.

James said: "I seen something on social media, where young fellas were asked about St. Tiernach's Park. What they said spoke volumes about the atmosphere down the town.

"It's not just about the park, it's about Clones- as a whole. Clones people give up the town on that day. They let everybody in, no qualms. It makes the atmosphere special.

"It might be 18 years since I was down there, it's a very special place to be- and it's great that Monaghan are in it," he added.

Meanwhile, former Monaghan player Fintan Kelly is reflecting on how different this year's final will be.

Before retiring in 2023, the Clones man had represented Monaghan at the highest level.

Speaking to Northern Sound, he reflected on the importance of the day.

Fintan said: "It's really special- the home of Ulster football, it always has been. Just seeing the town flooded with colour, on Sunday it will be white and blue.

"It's always a lot more special when you have Monaghan in the final. 2010 was the last time I watched Monaghan in the final as a supporter, it was unreal.

"Obviously, as a player coming up the hill- seeing the fans- it's a bit more special.

"For the club it's massive. It's the biggest day in the calendar in Ulster Football, and having it here. Sometimes they take it away, for whatever reason, but this will always be the home of Ulster football," he added.
