The death of Garda Kevin Flatley should serve as a "stark reminder" of the dangers of the job, according to the Garda Representative Association.
The GRA says his colleagues are "numb" after the 49 year old was killed in the line of duty yesterday afternoon.
The father-of-two was struck by a motorcycle while carrying out a speed checkpoint in north Dublin. The motorcyclist, who's aged in his 30s, remains in a serious condition in Beaumont Hospital. GRA General Secretary Ronan Slevin says the wider Garda community remains in "shock."
Meanwhile, book of condolence will open today for those who want to pay tribute to Garda Kevin Flatley. Fingal County Council says it will be available at the reception of County Hall in Swords and the Civic Offices in Blanchardstown. The Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Brian McDonagh, has extended his condolences to Garda Flatley's family, friends and colleagues.
