Former minister Heather Humphreys has confirmed to the Joe Finnegan Show this morning she is putting her name forward in a bid to become the next president of Ireland.
The former Cavan-Monaghan TD confirmed to the programme on Northern Sound today that after days of speculation she will now seek a nomination from her party to run in the upcoming election.
It follows the shock announcement by Mairéad McGuinness last week that she would now not run for Fine Gael due to health reasons.
Ms Humphreys ruled out a bid for the Aras back at the end of May following a period of time considering the prospect of putting her name in the hat for the job.
She announced last October that she would leave politics to enjoy her retirement and spend more time with her family and friends but she has always been linked to a bid at the presidential race even when she was a minister prior to quitting political life.
Now after a number of days of uncertainty, the local woman has decided to put her name forward for the top job and will now have a busy election campaign ahead of her in the coming weeks and months.
The news comes following the announcement by MEP Sean Kelly that he has confirmed a bid for the Aras to RTE this morning.
Fine Gael nominations open this morning following the party’s executive meeting that was held last night with a two week window opening at midday today for potential candidates to run in the presidential race.
