A Co Monaghan councillor says more needs to be done to slow traffic down across local villages and towns.
Cllr Noel Keenan was speaking at today's meeting of the Local Community Safety Partnership which was held at the Peace Campus in Monaghan Town.
The Sinn Fein representative believes stricter enforcement is needed around byelaws in Carrickmacross when it comes to HGVs travelling around the town centre at peak times.
Cllr Keelan said we rely heavily on the haulage industry and it keeps the economy going, however, byelaws are in place for a reason.
From 8am in the morning until 5pm in the evening HGVs are not allowed in the town centre and Cllr Keelan is calling for stronger enforcement when dealing with this issue.
He said we see startling figures around fatalities, but we don't see figures of the many individuals whose lives have been severely altered due to serious injuries.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Keelan said the county has been subject to many devastating losses, particularly at pedestrian crossings and that should never be the case.
He told Northern Sound: "Carrickmacross is an expanding town, there's a lot of traffic movements and we're very central to many places like Dundalk, Dublin, Castleblayney and other areas.
"More needs to be done to protect our pedestrians and I did flag up today that many people have lost their lives on our Main Street in Carrickmacross over recent years and we need to be doing more to ensure that those tragedies don't happen again."
