Calls for change to driving ban "loophole"

Currently, people convicted of dangerous driving causing death are disqualified from driving for a period.

The Junior Transport Minister says he wants to close a driving ban loophole for fatal traffic offences.

Currently, people convicted of dangerous driving causing death are disqualified from driving for a period.

However, it begins from the day of their sentencing, meaning much of the ban is served by the time their prison sentence is over.

The Irish Independent reports Minister Seán Canney is backing calls for driving bans to begin after a sentence is served.
