There has been a call on the Minister for Justice to visit communities in Carrickmacross who are living in fear due to several incidents of anti-social behaviour. Aontú Senator Sarah O’Reilly says she has been inundated with calls and emails from worried constituents, fearful for their safety due to recent frightening incidents coupled with falling Garda numbers in the Garda Division.
In a statement issued to Northern Sound, Senator O’Reilly said; "This is a really a perfect storm and people are understandably very nervous and appalled that unsavoury incidents are happening in broad day light. A recent incident in Carrickmacross, where a man wielding a knife in Carrickmacross acted in a very threatening manner, understandably caused major worry and upset. This individual has been charged with that offence thankfully but what is deeply concerning is that he has had three bench warrants issued to him. We know that Garda numbers are falling countrywide, and this Garda Division is no different. Crime is rising, burglaries and other serious incidence of crime are increasing , as criminals take advantage of closed Garda stations, and our jails are bursting at the seams. So, it’s a perfect storm."
