At last week’s meeting of Monaghan County Council Cllr Colm Carthy proposed a motion to try and increase awareness of skin cancer.
Cllr Carthy says the hope is to make it easier for people to ensure their skin is protected when they’re out and about.
The motion called on the council to set aside a fund to introduce sun screen stations throughout the county at strategic locations. It's hoped it would begin on a pilot basis in certain areas but with a commitment to expand the rollout once started.
The motion also requests Monaghan County Council to help highlight the risks of skin cancer through public engagements. The Sinn Fein councillor said the motion was brought to the fore due to the fact that skin cancer is the most type of cancer in Ireland.
Cllr Carthy says as a local authority, Monaghan County Council needs to raise awareness around this very important topic.
