A local councillor has renewed calls for Cavan County Council to livestream the local authority monthly meetings.
Cllr Stiofan Conaty says he has been informed that this was requested in years past, and he is now seeking to renew those calls.
Cllr Conaty said the apparatus is there in the corner at every meeting, and it seems to be working and he says he cannot think of a single good reason for why these meetings cannot be broadcast on social media channels and the council’s own website.
He said these broadcasts should be available to play back for anyone who might miss the livestream. The Sinn Fein councillor says facilitating the live broadcasting of meetings would in no way take away from the journalism and political analysis of our existing print and broadcast outlets in Cavan.
In fact, he believes that it would enrich public discourse and broaden the interest for council-related news in these traditional media outlets. Cllr Conaty says this isn’t a radical idea - it is already standard practice in many other counties and councils, north and south. He added that it is time Cavan caught up.
