A local TD has called for better road conditions and more enforcement in an effort to improve road safety. Deputy Matt Carthy says if the government are serious about road safety then this needs to happen.
The Transport Minister says he has been assured 150 new Roads Policing Gardaí will be transferred into the unit by the end of this year. The Garda Commissioner said the unit would get an extra 75 officers last year and 75 this year, but new figures show just 23 officers were moved into Roads Policing in the second half of last year.
The strength of the unit has fallen from around 1,040 in 2009 to under 630 at the end of last year. Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Matt Carthy, says more visibility from Gardaí is needed (listen below):
