An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed in a turkey flock in Co. Cavan by the Department of Agriculture today.
Restriction and surveillance zones are in place around the site in Cavan.
It’s the fifth outbreak of the disease in less than a month on a commercial poultry farm in the Republic of Ireland, while there have also been multiple cases confirmed in Northern Ireland. .
In early November, within the space of a week, three separate incidents of the disease were detected on turkey farms in Carlow, Meath, and Monaghan.
Anyone who comes across a dead or obviously sick bird is asked not to touch it and report the incident via the Department of Agriculture's Avian Check app.
