Caution advised on N2 as deer on the loose

Travellers on the N2 between Broomfield to Castleblayney need to be cautious where 16 deer are on the loose.

Anyone travelling on the N2 between Broomfield to Castleblayney are being advised that up to 16 farm deer have broken from their enclosure. Caution is needed on that stretch this evening as its expected that they will return to the local farm.

According to the Irish Deer Commission dawn and dusk is when deer are most active and local gardaí are calling on motorists to be extra cautious in the coming hours in the area. Northern Sound understand that 40 deer had originally escaped from the farm but up to 24 have now returned.

According to local Gardaí, its expected that the others will now return to their holding meaning they will have to cross the busy stretch of road. Drivers are being asked to reduce speed and should be prepared to stop, but never swerve as you could hit another obstacle or oncoming vehicle.

If you see a deer ‘dip your headlights’ as the full beam may cause the deer to freeze. If a deer has crossed in front of your vehicle, be aware that others will follow.
