A charolais calf born two months ago in Cavan is drawing some attention in farming circles because of unique markings on its forehead. The male calf belongs to an experienced farmer whose friend, Bernie, brought its markings to the attention of the Joe Finnegan Show.
Describing the calf as "very rare and very beautiful", Bernie submitted a photograph of the animal, which clearly shows a loveheart patch on it's forehead. Bernie said she wanted to know if anyone in the Shannonside / Northern Sound region knew of any other calf born with such an unusual patch.
When it was pointed out there have been other reportings of calves with similar markings in Ireland, South Africa and the US, Bernie pointed to the fact that her friend's calf has a cross in the centre of the loveheart. Bernie said there has been "great interest in the calf" with some people even saying they can make out the shape of a St Brigid's Cross on the animal's head. The calf, which does not have a name, is going up for sale in Dowra Mart on Saturday, 11th November.
