A local councillor believes that the Mercosur Trade Agreement is not a "done deal."`
Representatives of EU member states have voted in favour of adopting the EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement in a key vote today.
However, Ireland was one of the countries that voted against the agreement.
Independent Ireland Cllr. O'Reilly highlighted that MEP's still have to vote on the agreement in the EU Parliament later this month.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he said that Ireland has a massive say in the agreement.
He believes the agreement will have implications for Irish consumers.
Cllr. O'Reilly said: "At the end of the day, this is not just about agriculture. This is about the Irish consumer.
"This has far reaching implications which are greater than we even know at this moment of time," he added.
Meanwhile, a protest is being held by Independent Ireland at the TUS Athlone campus tomorrow.
The General Secretary of the ICSA, Hugh Farrell is urging farmers to attend.
The Co. Cavan man believes that pressure can still be put on member states
Mr. Farrell said: "The vote is coming up in a few weeks time. We need everybody to put pressure on member states.
"This is not just about farmers, consumers are the biggest part of this," he added.
Finally, pig farmer Frank Brady from Cootehill says the Mercocsor deal is bad news for rural Ireland.
He said: "I've gone into many a shop in recent weeks, and they're saying farmers going.
"I'm standing here in Cootehill town, and I'll guarantee you its the farming community keeping this town alive," he added.
