A Cavan councillor has called on the Government to fund a "national campaign" to highlight the issue of dog fouling and to educate dog owners of their responsibilities.
Action was issued by Fianna Fail's Aiden Fitzpatrick after he received complaints by Drumlin House, a school dedicated to young people with special needs.
According to Cllr Fitzpatrick, students who are "out and about" every day in Cootehill are facing major difficulties in relation to dog fouling, particularly those who are wheelchair users.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Fitzpatrick described the situation as "unacceptable."
He added that it's important for dog owners to be responsible for the sake of others and to adhere to dog fouling rules and restrictions:
""We hope we'll be able to pin down a way of protecting dog fouling better but it's up to the public also to say hold on, stop, you can't do that, that's illegal and call people out".
