A Cavan councillor has raised his concerns over the backlog in the number of those waiting on a driving test.
Cllr Stiofan Conaty says over 72,000 people are now in limbo, which he says is an increase in 60 percent since 2022.
He said this backlog has grown by nearly 10,000 over the last three months alone.
The Sinn Fein Councillor says the crux of the issue seems to be one of supply and demand, and the solution for which lies in expediting the recruitment of permanent instructors.
The average waiting time to take a test is now well above the statutory maximum of 10 weeks.
Cllr Conaty says he belives they push up the costs of learning to drive and trap learner drivers in expensive insurance policies.
The Co Cavan Councillor says it's not good enough that this situation isnt been tackled head on by the government.
