Cavan County Council calls for Larry Murrin removal

Several councillors from across the parties in the council raised the issue.

Cavan County Council this week became the 14th local authority to call for Larry Murrin to be removed from the role of Chairperson of Bord Bia.

It comes as Mr. Murrin has stepped aside from his role as Bord Bia Chairman as a governance review takes place.

Protests had been ongoing for weeks after it emerged that Murrin's company, Dawn Farms, imported Brazilian beef for use in some of its products.

Cavan County Council will now write to the Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon to remove Mr Murrin as Chairperson of Bord Bia following a motion brought forward to the local authority by the Sinn Fein councillors of Cavan.

Several councillors from across the parties in the council raised the issue.

Cllr Damien Brady on behalf of the Sinn Fein group said Mr Murrin should stand down immediately.

Speaking to Northern Sound, he said farmers have followed every rule to ensure the best quality and standards and the current chair is putting all that at risk.

Cllr. Brady said: "This all stemmed from Larry Murrin, as chair, is supposed to be promoting ther quality food farmers produce to a very high standard.

"Irish farmers are producing high quality beef, and exporting it to the EU. They're very confident they've produced a top quality product," he added.

Fine Gael councillor TP O'Reilly raised a similar motion in support of Cavan IFA, to table a motion of no confidence in Larry Murrin.

Cllr O'Reilly said that consumers have confidence in farmers and he said without farmers there would be no Bord Bia.

The Fine Gael councillor said Mr Murrin needs to go and has to go.

Cllr Noel Connell paid tribute to Richard Moeran who was one of five who protested inside Bord Bia headquarters for over 4 weeks.

He said it was his and others who helped bring around the current resolution to the issue as it stands.

Cllr Winston Bennett said Larry Murrin has lost the respect of farmers and he should step aside.
