The Departments of Transport and Agriculture, have this morning announced details of a €100 million fuel support scheme for farmers and contractors.
The package is designed to help the agri-food sector meet the challenges posed by increasing fuel costs.
Breifne O'Brien is Agriland's Technical Beef Specialist.
The Co. Cavan farmer outlined that the package targets those who are "worst hit" by the rising fuel costs.
Speaking to Northern Sound this morning, he highlighted that the package is in addition to the previous fuel supports package announced by the Tánaiste and Minister for Finance.
The ag-journalist hopes that the package will be enough to support farmers through a difficult period.
Breifne said: "There was a lot of frustration across rural Ireland, and the dependency on diesel- particularly in the haulage and contracting sector.
"We're heading into the busiest time of the year, with silage taking place. A lot of farm work, machinery work. Hopefully it will be enough for these businesses.
"Some of them are really feeling the pressure. Some of them are really struggling. Hopefully this measure will provide sufficient support," he added.
