Cavan IFA calls for additional supports to save pig sector

Cavan IFA is calling for additional supports to help save the pig sector.

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue met members yesterday while on an agri-food tour of the county.

A €7 million direct financial support was announced recently, but there are calls for a sustainability fund that would protect the sector in the long term.

Chair of Cavan IFA Maurice Brady says it's too important to the local economy to be allowed collapse further.

The meeting was organised by local TD Niamh Smyth, who said the message from local farmers was clear.
