A Co Cavan councillor has called for "answers" to be given over the downgrading of Garda stations, particularly in areas like West Cavan. Cllr Brendan Fay believes vital resources are going to the likes of Drogheda, Dundalk and Ardee whilst Co Cavan has been "forgotten about." Despite this, he says Gardaí on the ground across Co Cavan are doing the "best they can with limited resources."
Cllr Fay fears that a lack of Gardaí on the beat has caused an influx of antisocial behaviour, particularly in West Cavan. At one time, 28 guards and five sergeants were based in Belturbet and the same in Ballyconnell, however there's stations now in West Cavan that don't even have a patrol car. As a result, he is calling on the Garda Commissioner and the Justice Minister to explain why stations are being downgraded, and why local areas are not getting the resources that are needed in our towns and villages:
