Cavan knitting club sending items to Nigerian hospitals

A Cavan based knitting group is working to make and send blankets, bags, teddies and hats internationally.

Marie Lynch set up the group 25 years ago in Cavan Town, and since then it has gone from strength to strength.

Currently there are between 30 and 35 members meeting every Wednesday from 3pm to 5pm in the Day Centre.

Blankets made by the group have been sent to maternity hospitals in Nigeria.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, Maria explains the work done by the group and where the items are sent.

"It's actually divided between eight hospitals and each mother as she leaves the hospital with her new baby gets a blanket to take home and I'm told it's her only possession."

"Well the teddy bears, the doctor said that the children who are in the hospital, if they get a teddy to put it in their cot they get better faster than those who don't have one and then they get it to take home with them"

"Last year we sent out 158 blankets, 45 bags and 140 teddies. We also sent to Ukraine 105 blankets, 175 bags and 13 bags. Now this year so far we have 342 blankets, 390 bags, 88 teddies and 95 bags and some baby hats."
