'Candidates like Niamh Smyth from Cavan getting votes in the southern part of Monaghan'

The Cavan Monaghan constituency is likely to lose its north Meath affiliation at the next General Election.

This is according to Adrian Kavanagh of Maynooth University who was speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning.

Mr Kavanagh discussed the possible changes to Ireland's political landscape as a result of the latest Census figures which point to a population increase not seen since the Famine.

An increase in TD numbers is likely to reflect that increase and political analysists say the rise will be between 171 and 256 TDs.

The university expert says Cavan Monaghan will probably become a full five-seat constituency in its own right.

"In 2020, 2016, you would have seen candidates like Niamh Smyth from Cavan getting votes in the southern part of Monaghan," he continued.

"And of course, Minister Heather Humphreys is always able to pick up votes in Cavan as well as in her main base in Monaghan."
