Cavan and Monaghan have both been described as "consistently good performers" following the latest IBAL survey which was released earlier today.
Monaghan has been ranked as the fourth cleanest town in the country.
This marks yet another top five position for the county town after it was ranked third cleanest last year.
Ten sites were surveyed and six sites out of the ten achieved the top litter grade which is 'Grade A'.
This included the approach road at the N54, the Dublin Road, St Joseph's Church, Monaghan Business Park, Canal View and the deposit return scheme facility at Lidl.
Despite this, four of the ten sites fell short of cleanliness for being moderately littered.
This was The Diamond, Glaslough Street, Monaghan Library and Museum and the playground at Oriel Way.
Conor Horgan from IBAL believes some improvements on these could help Monaghan top the survey in the future.
Elsewhere, Cavan was ranked in the 19th spot, in the clean to European Norms category.
Similar to Monaghan, Mr Horgan described Cavan Town as a "consistently good performer" and a place that has "improved year on year."
Seven sites received 'Grade A' status, this included the approach roads, the residential area of Hampton Court, and the deposit return scheme at Tesco on the Main Street.
Despite this, Mr Horgan described the evaluation of the Con Smith Park as "disappointing."
The amenity received a 'Grade C', which means it was found to be heavily littered.
He says there is quite a lot to be done to remedy this situation.
