Schools in Cavan and Monaghan are included in a counselling in primary schools pilot.
Minister for Education and Youth, Helen McEntee, gave the information in response to a parliamentary question asked by Sorca Clarke.
Deputy Clarke asked about the number of primary and post primary schools with access to a dedicated mental health professional; and the estimated cost of providing one to every school.
In her response, Minister McEntee mentioned the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS), new national programme of mental health for post-primary schools and The Counselling in Primary Schools Pilot.
The Counselling in Primary Schools Pilot has two strands and works to support children's well-being and mental health in schools.
The first strand sees direct counselling supports being provided to primary schools for the first time.
The department has set up panels of pre-approved private counsellors providing in primary schools in Cavan, Monaghan, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, and Tipperary.
In total, 1,883 blocks of counselling have been allocated to schools across the pilot counties.
