The Cavan Pétanque Club is now All-Ireland champions. Several teams from Belturbet tavelled to Dublin at the weekend to take part in the national competition and won all six of the heats they were entered. Cavan Pétanque Club based in Belturbet Golf Club was only set up during lockdowns but, to date has cleaned up on the provincial and national stages. Pétanque is the ancient French sport that you've probably never heard of. Based on the games of boules, players aged from four to 94 can take part by throwing a steel ball on an outdoor piste.
The club welcomes new members and urges anyone who would like to boot their social life or activity levels to come and check it out. These members Mary O'Donohue-Duff and Geraldine Crossan are enjoying the benefits of their new sport already: "A group of us went to Marley Park in Dublin on Saturday last and we had a great day; we won, thank God. We played against six different teams in Ireland and we lifted the trophy at the end of the day and we're very proud," Geraldine told Northern Sound.
"At that match in Dublin, I had over 18,000 steps done for the day," Mary added,"I've met more people in the five months than I've ,met in half my life.""
