A local farmer has said that egg shortages on supermarket shelves have arisen because producers are not paid enough.
IFA Poultry Farmer, Brendan Soden said that producers have been warning retailers and egg packers that farmgate prices are not financially sustainable to meet growing demand.
The Cavan man highlighted cost increases in the industry since 2022, and the widening gap between Irish and EU pricing.
Mr. Soden believes producers cannot sustain output at current returns.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he said that producers have been leaving the business.
Mr. Soden said: "We've seen a number of producers exit the industry in the last couple of years.
"We've seen a drop in imports into the country, especially from the UK, demand is tight and we're seeing little to no imports coming into the country," he added.
