A Cavan senator is calling for urgent reforms to address the shortage of skilled workers.
Addressing the Seanad, Sinn Féin Senator Pauline Tully said people are struggling to get workers to carry out work such as plumbing.
Senator Tully also highlighted the need to reform the SUSI grant system, suggesting that eligibility should be based on net income rather than gross income.
Uptake in apprenticeships has increased over the last decade however, according to the local Senator, many are dropping out due to the low wages, starting at €6.50 an hour for certain sectors for a first year apprentice.
She says this must be addressed.
