A Co. Cavan Senator believes that county councils do not receive enough funding for roads.
Aontú Senator Sarah O'Reilly raised the issue in the Seanad last week (Thursday, January 29th).
According to Senator O'Reilly, in 2021 Cavan County Council received €508,000 for maintenance.
This feel to by €45,000 in 2025 to €463,000.
Senator O'Reilly said that she cannot see the logic behind the decision.
She believes that the condition of local roads is only getting worse.
Senator O'Reilly said: "What many people may not realise, is that our councils are chronically underfunded.
"Ordinary maintenance funding that comes from government has been drastically reduced. That's the money that keeps the water off our roads.
"The council use that to clear shucks, clean gullies, to do small patch repairs to stop roads from unravelling.
"When all costs are going up, that money has been reduced. That's totally unacceptable from government," the senator added.
