A Cavan Senator has voiced concerns that "electricians and plumbers are like hen's teeth" and that apprentices need to be treated better.
Senator Pauline Tully says that more needs to be done to improve the apprenticeships model in Ireland and to make it more attractive to students.
She is a member of the 'Joint Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science'.
Over the past few months, she said the committee has been focusing on apprenticeships and what can be done to improve the lives of apprentices and the apprenticeship model in Ireland.
Speaking in the Seanad she outlined some of the issues highlighted by apprentices.
