Cavan student appeals to Government to prioritise special education places

Emily-McPhillips Sheridan who is studying to be a social care worker in DKIT, told Northern Sound of her own struggle with attaining a suitable school place.

A young student and educational advocate from Co.Cavan is urging the Government to prioritise special educational places for children.

Emily-McPhillips Sheridan who is studying to be a social care worker in DKIT, told Northern Sound of her own struggle with attaining a suitable school place.

She was recently invited to a demonstration by parents outside Leinster House who are advocating for more special education places to be put on stream.

Emily, who is diagnosed with Autism, says that she didn't receive an appropriate place until she was in sixth year, and struggled with her mental health all the way through school.

She's urging the Government to listen to the needs of parents and those with Autism.
