A Co Cavan resident who is originally from Kyiv has shared her thoughts on the news that Ukraine has accepted proposals of a 30 day ceasefire. Overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had accepted a 30-day ceasefire with Russia after critical peace talks with the United States in Saudi Arabia. Antonia Karelina, from the Cavan Ukrainian community gave her thoughts on America's role in negotiating the proposed ceasefire stating that "we need their support."
Antonia says "there is no single spot in Ukraine that is safe." Speaking about her own city of Kyiv, Antonia said; "Kyiv is being shelled every other day if not every day and people's nervous systems never settles down and people are always alarmed." Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Antonia fears that Russia may take this opportunity to reload and further invade Ukraine. While the US will now go forward and present the terms around the ceasefire to Russia, Antonia hopes that the ceasefire will be accepted and will lead to lasting peace:
