Cavan woman says pension increase is 'modest' but will 'make a difference'

The Co-Chairperson of the Cavan Older People's Council has shared her thoughts on today's Budget announcement.

It’s understood there will be double welfare payments this Christmas for social welfare recipients, including pensioners.

Ministers have also indicated that the State pension will go up by €10 and a similar amount will also be given to everyone on unemployment benefit.

A €10 increase in the contributory pension will bring it 70c short of €300 a week.

The current contributory State pension is €289.30 per week for those 66 or over.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Carole said ten euro is "modest" but it can make a "real difference," especially when it comes to helping pay bills.

She says many pensioners are already living on the poverty line:
