Cross-border community competition kicks-off in Clones

"That is what we want to do, bring young players, families from across the border together, to celebrate community connections."

A a brand new community competition brought teams from Monaghan and Fermanagh together last weekend.

The cross-border, family sports festival brought together clubs from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, at the Peace Link in Clones.

The event was supported by PeacePlus, a European funded programme that brings communities from across the border together.

Four teams; Monaghan Town F.C, Enniskillen Rangers F.C, Enniskillen Town United F.C, and Clones Town F.C, took part in the one day event.

In the final on Saturday afternoon, Clones Town overcame Enniskillen Rangers 3-0.

The competition was co-ordinated by Jason Maguire, the Health and Wellbeing Co-Ordinator at the Peacelink.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Jason explained how sport can bring communities together.

He said: "I can feel the tense energy in the changing rooms, because this is our inaugural Peace Cup.

"But it runs deeper than that, sport has the extraordinary ability of bringing communities together

"That is what we want to do, bring young players, families from across the border together, to celebrate community connections," Jason added.

Tom Mohan is a former League of Ireland player, and has coached Ireland underage team's for decades.

He has been coaching as part of the PeacePlus programme, and took training sessions with all four clubs in the competition.

Tom told Northern Sound about his experiences coaching some of Monaghan's most talented players, including Mark Connolly.

"I worked with Mark, the first year I was involved in the u17s, that team got to the European Finals.

"Mark played an integral part- centre back, he was a really good young player. He had a great career, fantastic career.

"I wasn't lucky enough to coach Johnathan [Douglas], but another Clones local lad who has had a fantastic career. To be captain of Leeds United, play for your country, achieved great things.

"Both lads have been brilliant for the game, great ambassadors for the region as well," he added.

Jordan Wood is a talented young footballer from Enniskillen Rangers, who was playing in the competition last Saturday.

He was hoping to meet their biggest rivals in the final.

"It would be fun to have [Enniskillen Town United] in the final.

"We know most the lads, it would be great to beat them, and laugh at them," Jason explained.
